Seeing friends, learning, preparing for the future and fulfilling parent expectations are some of the key motivators for young people to attend school according to young people in Growing Up in New Zealand who have taken part in the Our Voices study.

Understanding the factors that enable attendance and those that may cause barriers to attending school are of vital importance as we approach the start of the new school year. This is the basis of the first report to be released this week in the Our Voices Summer Snapshot Series.

While most of the young people in the study feel happy about school, they acknowledge that the current education system in New Zealand does not work for everyone.

The voices and perspectives of our young people provide critically valuable insights that can be used inform to strategies that foster attendance and wider school engagement.
