Regular school attendance is recognised as being critical for young people both here in Aotearoa and abroad. Our Voices aimed to take a different approach to understanding attendance patterns by including students’ perspectives and experiences alongside quantitative measures of attendance.

Tingrui (Ricky) Qiao’s paper ‘Understanding School Attendance Through Multimodal Modelling of Student Narratives’ explored the use of the multimodal Our Voices data and Ministry of Education attendance data, developing a modelling framework for predicting attendance percentage and persistent absenteeism.

Ricky was selected to present his paper at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in Singapore. ICLR is one of the primary conferences of high impact in machine learning and artificial intelligence research and is ranked A* in the international Computing Research and Education (CORE) conference rankings.
