Application Process for the Our Voices Doctoral Scholarship

Thank you for your interest in the Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland doctoral scholarship opportunity associated with the Our Voices project. This page includes all the information required to submit your Expression of Interest for this doctoral scholarship opportunity which is due by October 1.

After this time, we will select the applicants that are best suited to this project and provide the necessary guidance to enable these applicants to submit their application for the doctoral programme which is due by 1 November.

Please look through our website to become familiar with the Our Voices project, including its aims, process, existing projects and proposed outcomes. You are also welcome to organise a Zoom meeting with Dr Georgia Rudd (georgia.rudd@auckland.ac.nz) if you would like further information about the project or to scope the viability of your proposed project. These sources of information should support the writing of your Statement of Research Intent document which is required as part of both the expression of interest and application for doctoral programme checkpoints.

We appreciate that the scope of potential PhD projects associated with this doctoral scholarship opportunity is broad. This was done intentionally to demonstrate that the Our Voices project and dataset allows for a range of potential options for research projects. We are particularly interested in how your interests, skillset and knowledge base align with the Our Voices project. Please complete the Statement of Research Intent document to the best of your ability (including the ‘Faculty Strategic Objectives’ section) to submit as a part of your expression of interest.

To assist in writing your Statement of Research Intent, we have appended the questions that were asked of the young people via the Tō Mātou Rerenga – Our Journey app. These questions will help you to get a sense of the type of data that we have collected. Responses to these questions ranged from ‘IDK’ to small essays depending on the individual, the question being posed, and how far through the question set they were.

Lastly, we have been blown away with the response to this doctoral scholarship opportunity. We acknowledge that navigating the PhD application process and organising funding for study can be tricky. However, there may be other opportunities to use the Our Voices data if you do not receive this particularly doctoral scholarship, either as an external researcher or PhD student with alternative funding arrangements. Please keep in touch if you continue to be interested in using the Our Voices data.
